Flames Left Searching as Amateur Scouting Vacancies Burn On

2026-01-22

The Calgary Flames are used to playing with fire, but this season the heat is coming from an unexpected source: an ongoing struggle to assemble a full amateur scouting staff. While most MRFHL clubs are busy crisscrossing junior rinks and European tournaments, Calgary appears to be searching for scouts the same way teams search for a fourth-line center at the trade deadline — nervously, urgently, and with diminishing optimism.

League sources say the Flames currently have “several open positions” in their amateur scouting department, a phrase one rival executive translated as “a lot more empty chairs than clipboards.”

“It’s not ideal,” admitted General Manager Derek Loftus. “We’d like to have eyes in more buildings. Right now, we’re relying on a combination of video, recommendations, and vibes.”

That explanation has not gone unnoticed around the league.

“I thought amateur scouting was about watching teenagers play hockey, not reading tea leaves,” quipped Edmonton Oilers GM Tanner Braithwaite. “But hey, maybe Calgary’s onto something. Draft by horoscope.”

Another rival GM was less charitable. “Usually teams fight over scouts,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve seen scouts fight over not going somewhere.”

The Flames’ predicament has quickly become a punchline at league meetings.  NY Islanders GM Robby Jacklin joked that Calgary should simply “borrow a few dads from the stands” to fill out reports. “Half of them already think their kid’s a first-rounder,” he laughed. “They’d fit right in.”

The situation has even inspired gallows humor among scouts themselves. One veteran talent evaluator, currently employed by a different club, said Calgary’s job postings have become a recurring group-chat topic. “Every time one pops up, someone sends the link and says, ‘You taking this one?’ Then we all pretend we lost service.”

To be fair, the Flames insist the situation is temporary and manageable. The organization has emphasized its commitment to modern analytics, centralized decision-making, and collaboration. Critics, however, note that analytics are usually meant to supplement scouting, not replace the human beings who actually attend games.

“Video is great,” said Clayton Hansler, Toronto Maple Leafs GM. “But it doesn’t tell you who competes when their bus breaks down or who disappears when the rink’s cold and the crowd’s angry. Unless Calgary’s figured out how to simulate Saskatoon in February.”

Fans, meanwhile, have begun to worry that the Flames’ first draft class in nearly a decade may look a little unconventional. Social media speculation has already linked the team to several “high-character projects” and at least one player who had already retired because no one actually saw him play.

Montreal Canadiens GM Steph Boudreau summed it up best: “Drafting without scouts is like cooking without tasting. You might still make something edible — but there’s a real chance it’s burnt.”

For now, Calgary continues its search, hoping to rebuild its scouting ranks before the next draft clock starts ticking. Until then, the Flames remain one of the league’s hottest topics — and not for reasons anyone in the organization would prefer.

If I had a nickel for every time I was stranded in Saskatoon in February.... Fantastic article. This rocked. Well done with all the quotes.
