Volchenkov dealt 2009-06-28 Shortly after dealing winger Erik Cole, the Chicago Blackhawks went to work on dealing another player made expendable by the teams impressive pipeline of young talent. Volchenkov was sent to the Pittsburgh Penguins along with the 87th overall pick in the draft. In exchange the Hawks recieved the 17th overall pick, and promising prospect Cal O'reilly. The team used the pick to select highly touted prospect Jordan Schroeder. "What Jordan has done in his college career speaks for itself, the fact he fell to us at 17 is a shock, and years from now people are going to be looking at this in the same light they looked at Zach Parise's tumble down the draft board." The team is also high on the other asset added in Cal O'reilly, "He has dominated the American League for two seasons and showed late last season that he belongs in the NHL, and should develop into a top-6 forward."
