Canucks deal with Stanley Cup hangover.

2026-01-18

To say the Canucks title defence has not gone to plan is a gross understatement. The Stanley Cup celebration hangover lead to a disastrous start where they saw themselves sitting at the bottom of the league, half way through the season. From champs to chumps in the blink of an eye. Such is the fine line of success and failure in the MRFHL.

As If being last in the league was not enough motivation to turn their season around, not holding their 1st round pick in this year’s draft would also contribute to their new situation as well. After surrendering that first round pick as part of the future consideration of the Sam Reinhart deal with Toronto, the pick would later be traded to the Anahiem Ducks in a separate deal in the offseason. The Duck’s GM was publicly celebrating leading the division, (and at point the league), while also holding the potential 1st overall pick in the upcoming draft. If that’s not post board material for the Canucks, I don’t know what is. With that inspiration, the Canucks have now made it their new season goal to not let that pick be first overall. Never ones to be shy of a challenge, in fact, their quest right now is to make the playoffs and not let it be a lottery pick at all.

The Canucks would go out and make some significant changes to their roster to improve their fortunes. In a massive blockbuster that include 5 teams, the Canucks would move some key players in their cup run to add some fresh blood to the roster. Gone were John Carlson, Travis Konecny and Filip Forsberg,(along with some other pieces) to their division rivals in Edmonton, for Aleksander Barkov, Josh Morrisey and Connor Hellebuyck. These three have been the catalyst in the Canucks new fortunes. Barkov has been lights out with 23pts in his first 13 games with the club.

With just under half the season remaining in the schedule, and 8 pts out of a division playoff spot, the Canucks will continue on their daunting journey to resurrect their club from the ashes. They have shaken off their hangover and who knows what could happen if they just make it into the playoffs. Wouldn’t that be a story of legends.
