Bruins Trade Deadline Review

2017-03-23

Boston Bruins made two signifcant moves at the deadline. The most noteable move sending 23 year old and Nikita Kucherov to join former team-mate Jonas Brodin in the Big Apple. "Phil gave me a call early in the evening and offered Matthew and a first. It took us a few hours to discuss it with upper management including a call to the President of Hockey Operations but in the end we felt this was the best move for our organization."  NIkita Kucherov is currently second in team scoring and already a top 10 MRFHL talent. Bruins likley made this move to help alieviate cap concerns in the future with Tavares, Voracek, Rielly,  Hertl and Murray coming up in Restricted Free Agency this summer. With this move its likely Bruins can continue to keep all their players while still maintaining some cap flexibility.

The last move of the night was a trade with the San Jose Sharks for three picks in 2018. The Bruins send Kevin Fiala, Kevin Hartman and Pontus Aberg for two first round picks and a second in 2018. This was a vintage Boston Bruin move going back to what has lead to their success and pipeline of talent. The Bruins have been building a solid core through the draft but over the past few years got away from this strategy . The bruins have now stockpiled seven first round picks over the next two years.

Bruins remain committed to their young core and will likley continue to move some of their veterans to give their young guns more playing time. This includes the core of Barkov, Reinhart, Drouin, Bennett and Hertl up front and Rielly, Vatanen, Murray and Severson on the blue line. With Tkachuk, Meier and Perilini looking to crack the line up next year there won't be enough ice-time to go around.
