A Heartfelt Thank-You

2026-06-15

TORONTO, ON — General Manager Clayton Hansler has always had a flair for the dramatic and it certainly showed as his Maple Leafs were dragged to overtime of game seven before defeating the Anaheim Ducks and claiming the league’s treasured trophy.

It’s been just shy of two years since Hansler took the helm of the Maple Leafs, a mismanaged team that had just finished 22nd in the league and missed the playoffs by 12 points.

“I remember shortly after getting the job when I found out the team didn’t have a draft pick until the fourth round,” Hansler recalls.  “I don’t want to say the cupboards were bare, but there were at least three moths and a tumbleweed in there.”

We told you Clayton had a flair for the dramatic.

The effervescent GM might spin an impressive tale, but the outlook wasn’t quite as grim as he might let on.  Hansler inherited John Tavares, whom he immediately named Captain, as well as Claude Giroux.  On the wing he had Troy Terry, Sam Reinhart and Conor Garland as well as a Vezina calibre goalie in Andrei Vasilevskiy.

“In all honesty, I joined at a pretty ideal time.  The team was just hitting maturation, we were lucky to have Matthew Knies signing his ELC (entry-level contract) during my first off-season and I was just really lucky to come into such a tight league where all my counterparts across the 31 other teams are just really good, genuine people,” says Hansler.  “Some days I felt that they were doing whatever they could to help us win.”

It’s not often that you find such appreciation in sports for one’s adversary.  It’s a quality that really imbues feelings of positivity and unity.  It’s with this in mind that I frame this championship article.

Instead of chronicling the many conquests the Maple Leafs had over their President’s Trophy winning season and Stanley Cup winning playoff run, instead I offer a letter of thanks to all those who helped the Maple Leafs soar to new heights.

To Rino and the Vancouver Canucks:  It’s with the utmost appreciation that we reflect on the trade that brought Jesper Bratt to Toronto.  Sure, Sam Reinhart may have helped win you the Stanley Cup last year, but not only did Bratt lead the Leafs with 25 points during this year’s climb to the top, you also gifted your eastern conference counterparts Marek Vanacker and a first round pick that will ensure Toronto remains dominant for years to come.  Thank you so much for your contribution towards our 2026 Stanley Cup.

To Jesse and the Minnesota Wild:  It seemed insane at the time that you’d be willing to give up future Norris Trophy candidate Zach Werenski after just 30 short games in the great state of Minnesota, but where others would say it couldn’t be done — you found a way.  Sure, it meant taking back Jakob Chychrun — the very player you had dealt in order to obtain Werenski — but you were willing to make that sacrifice so that the Leafs could taste victory.  Thank you for your considerable contribution towards the 2026 Stanley Cup.

To Todd and the Chicago Blackhawks:  One would think that a General Manager would be more selfish when dealing with a new, inexperienced GM — especially given that you’re yet to win a championship in the MRFHL.  But nope, not Todd.  He might be a little sharp-tongued at times, but this guy’s gotta heart of gold.  Not only did he let go of Bo Horvat, he also (out of the goodness of his heart) retained half the salary.  Man, if that’s not a grand gesture of generosity, show me what is.  Thank you so much for making such a large contribution to Toronto’s Stanley Cup winning team.

To Rory and the Columbus Blue Jackets:  You may not have lopped off a huge limb like some of the other GMs mentioned, but the Garnet Hathaway contribution cannot be overlooked.  As part of a dynamite third line, Hathaway scored eight times during the 2026 Playoffs — which is considerably more than the lowly seven points he gave the Blue Jackets all season long.  To know that you handed Toronto eight playoff goals (two of which were game-winners) and all it cost was a 5th and a depth prospect, it truly shows that you are both a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you for your meaningful contribution to the Maple Leafs 2026 Stanley Cup.

To Boud and the Montreal Canadiens:  People wouldn’t believe it if we told them.  Like honestly, in the more-than-one-hundred-years of rivalry between the Leafs and the Habs, who would believe that the Canadiens GM would willingly contribute so heavily to a Maple Leafs Stanley Cup.  But again, there’s a bond — a fraternity — that exists between the MRFHL GMs that can’t be found anywhere else.  Toronto would’ve paid a third round pick just for Montreal to get Claude Giroux off their books, but Boud wanted to do more.  The generous general manager insisted that the Leafs take back Adam Larsson (along with Sam Malinski and a fourth round pick) in order for Clayton Hansler to live out his dream of guiding a team to a Stanley Cup.  Merci Boud, pour ce magnifique cadeau et pour nous avoir aidés à la Coupe Stanley.

To Robby and the Soviet Islanders:  When everyone else doubted what the Maple Leafs could do, you believed.  Not only did you orchestrate an insane trade to obtain Ovechkin making Pavel Dorofeyev redundant on your roster and trading him off for spare parts (even though he’s only 25 years old), you also graciously bowed out of  the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals so that the Maple Leafs could achieve a recognition beyond any other.  You truly are a man of principle and kindness.  Thank you for both your contributions to the Leafs 2026 Stanley Cup.

To Martin and the Tampa Bay Lightning:  You didn’t think I was going to forget about you, did ya? Josh Manson was the veteran blue liner the Maple Leafs needed.  Sure, he might be a little overpaid, but it’s pieces like Manson that take a team from being playoff bound to a Stanley Cup champion. And knowing that you packaged him with a fourth round pick for nothing more than a couple deep prospects and a fifth rounder — man, that really stands out.  It’s no wonder everyone in the MRFHL likes you so much… except maybe Tanner, that move with Solovyov is pretty unforgivable.  Regardless, thank you for your contribution towards the Maple Leafs 2026 Stanley Cup.

Speaking of Tanner — to Tanner and the Edmonton Oilers:  While you might not have provided the undefeated season that you promised your fanbase, you certainly were undefeated in kindness and generosity.  No one would think that under all that quick-witted snark, existed a generous soul that would be willing to give up Louis Crevier for what?! Mikael Pyyhtia? A player signed in MRFHL free agency and lost in the depths of the NHL Blue Jackets depth charts?  Of all the selfless things a GM can do, that really contends for the top.  Thank you for your kind contribution towards the Maple Leafs 2026 Stanley Cup.

To Austin and the Detroit Red Wings:  Veterans of NHL (and MRFHL) front offices will often be caught saying that you can’t win a championship without buy-in from all four lines.  You see, it’s not just the superstars that make a champion, it’s the depth guys too.  I feel you knew that, and so when it came time for Toronto to look for only the highest quality of bottom-six contributors, you stepped right up with Michael McCarron knowing full well that not only was he both a defensive and face-off stud, but at $850k he allowed for maximum cap flexibility to add other pieces.  You truly are one-in-a-million (or at least one-in-thirty-one).  Thank YOU for your contribution towards the Maple Leafs 2026 Stanley Cup.

And last, but certainly not least, to Dylan and the Florida Panthers:  I’m not sure whether it was out of generosity or guilt for bouncing the Maple Leafs from the 2025 Playoffs that you offered up Philippe Myers — or maybe you just knew that at some point running up to the playoffs that Toronto would have a blue-liner go down and they’d need someone with curiously impressive defensive stats — but either way when the Maple Leafs needed a seventh defenceman you quickly answered the call.  Myers may not have seen a minute of action during the playoffs, but their President’s Trophy winning season wouldn’t have happened if not for the nine games Myers slotted in for.  Thank you so so much for your contribution towards the Maple Leafs 2026 Stanley Cup.

And so it’s with a heart full of gratitude and thanks that I conclude this letter.  I’m uplifted by the sheer abundance of generosity that exists in the MRFHL.  While in other circles you might find more of a cut-throat, kill-or-be-killed mentality — in this league you find 32 General Managers all pulling in the same direction and with the same goal… to make the Toronto Maple Leafs the greatest team that has ever competed in this league.

You’re all gems. Each and every one of you.

Clayton Hansler I could get on board with that... just as long as it's definitely not Derek's Cup.

Anders Lee with salary being retained in order for you to win a cup and keeping me tight against the cap. Also giving you Zadina for a calder run. You’re welcome for not mentioning this and leaving me hanging. I’m not even a thought in your eyes anymore. The lust is gone!

Indeed comrade. We graciously fell to the powers of sim influence and injured fingers in the final match of our bout. The battle was hot, heavy and full of great chatgpt images. Congrats again on bringing the cup back to the East.
