Burns Be-Leafs

2025-08-27

Brent Burns and the Toronto Maple Leafs set the league on notice late last week as the veteran defencemen chose the Maple Leafs above several other suitors ahead of his 17th MRFHL season. The highly sought after free agent made it clear as the market opened that he was only interested in signing with a contender.

Brent’s choice of the Maple Leafs seemingly anointed the Toronto team as the league’s foremost championship contender.

“There’s no other spot I’d rather be and no team that has a better chance to win it all,” the bushy-beard blueliner said with a toothless smile. “My favourite part in all of this is going to be when I’m boo’d by the fans of all the teams that tried to sign me, but missed out.”

Burns, a grizzly 40 year old from Barrie, Ontario, will be suiting up for his seventh MRFHL team since being drafted in 2003.  Despite two trips to the Stanley Cup Finals (2012, 2013) and three conference finals (2015, 2021, 2025) Brent is still on the hunt for his first Stanley Cup win.

“This is the type of leadership teams need,” quipped Clayton Hansler, the Leafs general manager. “We know that we took a big step forward next year, but if you don’t win the last game of the season, no one remembers you. Brent is the kind of guy that helps you win that last game of the season.”

The Leafs roster has gone through moderate reform, making trades to acquire Adam Larsson and Anders Lee and signing depth forwards Cole Smith and Matthew Nieto as well as goaltender Eric Comrie.

“Keeping a sense of stability is important to me,” continues Hansler. “We don’t want guys getting the sense that we’re just a revolving door. We still have offers out to bring back a few more of the free agents that were with us last year but I think the agent’s playing a little hard-to-get.”

One can only assume the Leafs brass have been talking to blueliners Zach Bogosian and Ryan Shea, the former having been with the team since the 2022/23 season and the latter coming in via trade last season and winning the Calder Cup with the Marlies.

Whether or not the Leafs can follow in the success the Marlies brought to the city last season is still months away, but one thing’s for sure, if Burns were a betting man, he’d put it all on blue.
